My job is simple: I design newspaper pages and edit the stories that go on them, and write headlines. I read the stories (copy) and edit them for grammar, spelling, punctuation, facts and organization, paying attention to guidelines for Associated Press style and local style. For example, AP style for those age 13-19 is "teen-ager," while local, SJ-R style is "teenager." Or that Dr Pepper has no period after the "Dr".
Below are some examples of pages I've done for The State Journal-Register. Click for larger image.

Before I worked at the SJ-R, I was a copy editor at the Daily Egyptian in Carbondale, Ill. It was there that I learned the art of being a copy editor. I was published in the DE twice, however, First, I was asked to write an article about the Student Recreation Center at SIU for the August 1997 Back to Campus trainwreck they send to all the new freshmen. I then willfully wrote a guest column in the Oct. 7, 1997, edition. It was about encouraging bike use on the SIU campus, except the editorial page editor at the time cut out that part, leaving just the funny story about riding bikes and knocking down pedestrians.
