Nature and Science -- not a marriage made in heaven, but until those in the health care profession realize the necessity of this bond, millions of people will continue to suffer and die. The downfall of this relationship is surely politics and money and are key issues. It has been said that "the answers to all of men's medical questions and cures for all ills have been placed on this earth by God. It is just up to us to find them'.
Medical schools, for all its demands, leaves many gaping holes in the students education that is ultimately reflected in our society's available medical information. Politics, money, and ignorance have blinded us from seeing the harsh truth for what it is. From widespread cancer to the common cold, we have become victims of this deadly chain of events that ultimately wears down our immune system. Research has demonstrated these events to occur and we unknowingly subject ourselves to the consequences, only to be left wondering why.
As we grow older, our complex natural immune system deteriorates, for the most part, because of the everyday conditions we live in: poor health habits, an environment that is bombarded with pollution - in the air, on land, and in water. Our food is filled with preservatives, tainted with pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, hormones, and even altered with genetic engineering. The medications we may have to take, such as over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, antibiotics, etc. - all these weaken our immune system. Our bodies cannot handle this and the results, among many other diseases, is cancer.
Magainin is currently testing "squalamine" for cancer, a synthetic derived from shark liver oil - human testing has begun, and data will be presented in the fall. So far, researchers say they've successfully prevented growth of brain, lung and breast cancer, as well as melanoma, in animal trials. Squalamine has been found to actually block the migration of cells. 'If the tumor cannot get blood supply, it simply cannot grow, it cannot enlarge and it cannot metastasize.' When the very same cells and the very same inducing substance were added Squalamine, cell migration towards the tumor stopped. The cause of a brain tumor's growth has been traced to the way it produces a substance which stimulates and attracts other cells: The healthy surrounding cells, once they sense these stimulating substance from the tumor, will literally migrate towards it. Once attached, the same blood vessels sustaining these healthy cells will also now sustain the tumor, contributing to its growth.
