Depression is a disorder that effects millions of people worldwide. Depression is no respecter of persons and manifests itself in many forms. Hopelessness, pessimism, lowered self-esteem, and reduced energy levels are all common symptoms of depression that limit ones capability to enjoy life. Although the onset of depression can be triggered by psychological factors, depression is frequently caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Biochemical-caused depression is typically treated with antidepressant drug therapy. Although an effective treatment for depression for many people, antidepressant drug therapy often has negative physical side effects that include dry mouth, nausea, gastrointestinal disorders, drowsiness, and others. These side effects have caused many to look for natural alternatives to dealing with depression.

What is St. Johns Wort?
St. Johns Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a stocky, yellow-flowering plant that grows abundantly in the wild. It has been used for thousands of years for addressing disorders of mood and temperament as well as many topical conditions such as bruises, pain, burns, varicose veins, and to dress wounds. Its peculiar name most likely comes from the medicinal use of the plant throughout the Middle Ages. St. John is attributed to be the patron saint of nurses and wort is the Old English word for plant. Thus the name St. Johns Wort or Nurses Plant. Recent studies are beginning to confirm the many restorative properties of this plant used throughout the ages. Of particular interest to modern scientists is St. Johns Worts potential use for mild depression with fewer side effects than standard anti-depressant drug therapy.* A specific extract of St. Johns Wort, hypericin, is used extensively throughout Europe to enhance mood and temperament. Recent research also indicates that St. Johns Wort may have anti-viral properties which may explain its many historical applications.* It is generally considered to be very safe and has minimal or no side effects.

What is Hypericin?
Hypericin is the principal active ingredient of St. Johns Wort. Hypericin extract contains at least ten groups of constituents that may contribute to the pharmacological activity of the herb. These constituents include several forms of hypericin, flavonoids, and procyanidins. It is important to note that there is a higher concentration of hypericins in the buds and flowers of the plant than in the stem and root portions. There are a number of St. Johns Wort products available today of varying quality and hypericin potency. Ground up dried St. Johns Wort plant found in many products, although rightly called hypericum, may not be standardized for hypericin content. The research-grade St. Johns Wort extract used in the majority of modern studies and applications of St. Johns Wort is standardized for hypericin content. When choosing a St. Johns Wort product, consumers should pay particular attention to the percent hypericin content of the total product weight. (To calculate the total amount of hypericin in a product, multiply the milligrams of hypericum by the percent hypericin in the product.) Research-grade St. Johns Wort extract can be standardized to 0.3% hypericin content. The higher the hypericin content of a product, the more potent the product will be per milligram dosage.
